After observing the Indian political circus for quite some time, I have become very very confused. It seems whatever I knew previously about the terms secular/secularism/secularist etc. etc. are all wrong. Can somebody help me out and define what are the meanings of these terms?

According to the English thesaurus it means,

worldly, material, lay or spiritual.

But, in the Indian context of course, it only means spiritual and that is the Hindu way.  Although, I have apathy for our down trodden Hindu rajas' and 'jamidar's' their cultural ego not only  destroyed Hinduism but has contributed largely on the political facade and chaos that we face today.  Because ealy Indian politician were made up of them.  No politician in India can claim to be secular in its true form.  Their only purpose is to lay claim to the all important "chair" for life.  And for that they will commit any sin thrown at them.  

Is India secular? NO
Is India democratic? NO NO NO!

disagree?  I'll tell you when you all shout at me.

I have read other posts of Didibhai, and I really appreciate the way u express urself and I acknowledge totally ur knowledge 'bhandar' but I couldn't be OK with u in this post ...

& hence ei post-e Didibhai-r loge amar jhogra oi jaibo bujiyar ...

of course unless we mean different things by secularism and democracy

For me, secularism means, a country or geographical region where people of all religious belief can practice their belief, so long their belief do not harm anybody else, without any fear or objection.

If this is the definition of secularism, I shall be proud to tell that India may be one of the fewest nations in the world today (if not the only) that is truely secular. Everywhere else in the world only the dominating religion can practice their faith without any problem. Look at France for example, here hindus can't put sakha & sindur, muslims can't put scurf and sikhs can't put turban publically, where as christians can go finely with their everyday religious practice.

I read in Hindustan times that in US one Manipuri familly put the sort of 'antena' what they put culturally in every house, and for that reason they were sued and were obliged to take it out later. For the religious freedom of minorities in Muslim countries, the less we speak, better it is.

India is the only country where Sikhs can put turbans, Muslims can put scurf, Buddhists can put their typical dress and everybody else can do whatever they want to practice their belief unless and untill that harm anybody else.

Then, about democracy ... in fact, democracy and secularism, at one point, will tend to overlap each other, as both are based on the principle that we have the freedom to practice our cultural way of life unless and untill that harms others (atleast what I feel). And thus even for democracy, as stated above, if India is the only country where we have full religious and cultural freedom (for groups of all origin) then how can we tell that in India we don't have secularism and democracy.

Unless we have different definition of secularism and democracy, I think its not only that these two things exist in India, I will tell that India is the only country where secularism and democracy exists ... and not only that, I will tell India is the only country where we don't have the problem of skin color, where u won't be denied a job just because u have a different skin color .... come out of India, and u will see how the world works ... u will be denied job just because of ur skin color, because u have put a sakha, because .... etc etc etc.

Dater morjada daat forlei buja jai re baba... daat thakte nai .. before accusing India, come out of here and compare how things work elsewhere ... or if u r living abroad, come to stay here to see how things work in our country ... and only then a true comparison will be possible.

However, I do agree that opinions may vary, and I will be open to listen from you ... what I have told is just my opinion ...

Dear Saurav,

I wrote nearly 1/2 hr writing my reply. But, somehow I cliked nback to get from Bijili and I lost all my text.  I have relentlessly to retrieve it for about 40 min now and its 3.10 am I am extemely tired.  I will however, write the reply again and post it.
