Mela and Silchar

Gandhi Mela has become an integral
part of Silchars cultural year . Its an annual fair starting officially
on 30th january , in remembrance of Mahatma gandhi. The earliest
recorded Mela( fair) in Silchar was in 1860. The fair takes place mostly
at the India Club grounds or the town club grounds and Silcharites
and people from adjoining villages and towns flock to enjoy the fair. Shops
selling from toys to telivisions , games , eatables and almost everything
are allover to be explored and enjoyed . But the best part is the chaat
shops ( spelled as CHAT ) ... chaat being one of the most favourite preparations
for Silcharites . From Silchar Chat House to AllIndia chat house
to Delhi chat house, the whole corner will be there with even people
queued to wait for thier turn to get in. For one full month
the Gandhi mela, Silchar is there to stay.
